The poll, conducted by the University of New Hampshire for the Wall Street Journal, found that Trump leads the field with 38% support, followed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis at 18% and former Vice President Mike Pence at 8%.
The poll also found that 70% of Republican voters believe Trump is the best candidate to defeat President Biden in the general election.
Trump's lead in the poll comes as the GOP field continues to shrink. In recent weeks, several potential candidates have dropped out of the race, including former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie.
The shrinking field is likely to benefit Trump, as it means that there will be fewer candidates to challenge his frontrunner status.
Despite his lead, Trump is not without his challengers. DeSantis has been steadily gaining ground on Trump in recent polls, and he is seen as the most likely candidate to challenge Trump for the Republican nomination.
Pence is also seen as a potential challenger to Trump, but he is seen as a more moderate candidate than Trump and DeSantis.
The Republican primary is still in its early stages, and anything is possible. However, Trump's lead in the polls and the shrinking field make him the clear favorite at this point in the race.
Trump's Lead Among Republicans
According to the University of New Hampshire poll, Trump leads among all Republican voters, including men, women, white voters, Hispanic voters, and voters who live in rural areas.
Trump's lead is also consistent across different age groups, with him leading among voters aged 18-34, 35-49, and 50 and older.
Trump's strong support among Republican voters suggests that he is the candidate who best represents the views of the Republican Party.
Trump's Strength on the Issues
The University of New Hampshire poll also found that Trump leads on several key issues that are important to Republican voters.
On the issue of border security, Trump leads DeSantis by 30 points. On the issue of the economy, Trump leads DeSantis by 15 points. On the issue of immigration, Trump leads DeSantis by 12 points.
Trump's strong positions on these key issues are likely to help him maintain his lead in the Republican primary.
