"If things were going well, you wouldn't be on this show," Maher said to DeSantis. "You'd be out campaigning."
DeSantis responded by saying that he was on the show to "talk about the issues that are important to the American people."
"I think it's important to have a conversation about what's happening in our country and how we can move forward," DeSantis said.
Maher then pressed DeSantis on his specific plans to defeat Trump.
"What is your path to victory?" Maher asked. "How do you beat Donald Trump?"
DeSantis responded by saying that he would focus on his record as governor of Florida.
"I think the best way to beat Donald Trump is to go out and show people what you've done in your state," DeSantis said. "I've been a successful governor in Florida. I've fought for the people of Florida. And I think that's the best way to earn the trust of the American people."
Maher then asked DeSantis about his stance on a number of issues, including abortion, immigration, and climate change. DeSantis defended his positions on these issues, but Maher continued to press him on his path to victory.
In the end, Maher said that he was not convinced that DeSantis had a clear path to defeating Trump.
"I don't know if you have a path to victory," Maher said. "But I wish you luck."
It remains to be seen whether DeSantis will be able to defeat Trump in the 2024 Republican presidential nomination race. However, his interview with Maher showed that he is willing to put himself out there and challenge Trump.
