DeSantis said in an interview with Fox News on Wednesday that Trump is "taking the ball and going home" by refusing to sign the pledge. He also said that Trump is "setting a bad example" for other Republicans.
"I think it's a sign of weakness," DeSantis said. "I think it's a sign that he doesn't believe in himself. And I think it's a sign that he doesn't believe in the Republican Party."
Trump has not responded to DeSantis's criticism. However, he has previously said that he will not sign the pledge because he does not want to be "bound" to anything.
The pledge that DeSantis is referring to is a document that asks Republican candidates to promise to support the party's nominee for president, even if it is not them. The pledge is designed to prevent a repeat of the 2016 Republican primary, when Trump and Ted Cruz refused to endorse each other after the convention.
DeSantis's criticism of Trump is significant because it shows that there is growing tension between the two men. DeSantis is seen as a potential rival to Trump for the Republican nomination in 2024, and his criticism of Trump could signal that he is not afraid to take him on.
"I think it's important for Republicans to have a standard bearer," DeSantis said. "And I think it's important for Republicans to have someone who is going to fight for our principles."
It remains to be seen whether Trump will respond to DeSantis's criticism. However, the tension between the two men is likely to continue to grow as the 2024 election approaches.
